Surely one of the important parts of English language learning process are evaluation and testing. In order for teacher to evaluate his students properly, he must be familiar with all evaluation methods. Usually a placement test is the first step in that process as it gives information to teachers about the language level of each student. After that, a diagnostic test can be given before the very start of EFL course so that a teacher can identify weak points of students and based on that plan the course accordingly. Progress tests are given to students usually after certain parts of the course are covered in order to check how much knowledge the students have retained. At the end of the course, students are given achievement tests which measure their overall progress. If students need to take some external examination (TOEFL or IELTS) they often take many practice tests before. Students usually don't love them, but evaluation and testing are necessary.
