Teaching correct pronunciation is an important aspect of teaching a foreign language and it shouldn’t be overlooked. In order to teach the pronunciation to students, a teacher must first know and understand himself/herself phonetics and phonology of the English language. Teaching pronunciation includes teaching correct intonation and teaching word stress. In order to represent the sounds we hear when we pronounce a word, we need to know the symbols of the International Phonemic Alphabet. It is necessary for the teachers to be familiar with IPA so they can explain it to students as well. It would be very useful for students to know to read IPA symbols as in that case they could use the dictionary to check not only the meaning, but also the pronunciation of a word.
