It is important to recognize what sort of content you are teaching (be it vocabulary, grammar or language functions), because each category has different methods to increase the effectiveness of the lesson. What you teach and how/when you teach it should depend on the difficulty of the topic, the level of your students, and the relevancy of the information to your students (for instance, if they are going on a field trip where they need to speak English, perhaps a language functions lesson is in order).
