During the first lesson a teacher should not use the course book but the activities that can achieve the following: establish rapport between the students and also between the teacher and the class; find out about the students; find out about students’ needs/aspirations with English; find out the English level of each student. To achieve these goals a teacher can use the following activities: questionnaire/survey, activity ‘Tell us about’, pass the ball game, needs analysis. It is important to use warmers at the beginning of the class to get students motivated and using English. The warmer activities should be fun but short and may include: hangman, Pictionary, tongue twisters, memory games. To deal with the group of students with different levels a teacher may use different materials; same material, but different tasks; don’t do anything or pair stronger students with weaker ones. Very often a teacher has to work with large classes and to create successful classes the following principles should be considered: use of worksheets, pair/group work, choral repetition, appointing group leaders, keeping dynamics, making the voice of the teacher clear. The job of the teacher is to have the students practicing and improving their English language skills not their native language. To maximize the use of English language teachers can do the following: make sure the activities are at an appropriate level, make sure that explanations are clear to all class members, encourage the use of English where appropriate, only respond to English, constantly remind the students. To encourage reluctant students to be involved in the class teachers can use: plenty of pair work, controlled practice, role-play, a tape recorder. To deal with difficulties with listening texts first of all teacher have to make sure it is a problem with listening skills and not just a quality of the record or low volume.
