This unit's main focus was the English tense system. The Tense System is supposed to be one of the main problem areas for both students and teachers. While Linguists might argue that there are technically only two tenses (the past and present), to be able to teach and learn the tense system it is helpful to divide the tenses into more than just two. For instance, we use past, present and future tenses, and each of these tenses contains four aspects. This allows ESL teachers to explain the tense system in much greater detail, and effectively teach the intricacies of the English language. For example, the use of different auxiliary verbs changes the meanings and the aspects of tenses. Using "have" and "are" do not create the same meaning. "I have a cat" vs "I am a cat" are two very separate phrases that mean very different things, so it is important to divide these aspects and treat them separately, as well as learn and explain them separately, and not only separate the past and present tenses.
