In this unit I have learned that contrary to popular belief, there are 12 tenses and not 3 as we know. There are 12 tenses, present, past and future. these three tenses each have four aspects. It is of great importance the an EFL teacher to have sound knowledge and understanding of this system. In this unit we focus on present tenses. Simple Present Tense- uses the verb's base form (write, work), or, for third-person singular subjects, the base form plus an -s ending (he writes, she works). The present tense indicates that an action is present, now, relative to the speaker or writer. Present continuous tense- is formed with the subject plus the present particle form (-ing) of the main verb and the present continuous tense of the verb to be: am, is, are. ... "He" is the subject, "is" is the present tense of the verb to be and "swimming" is the present participle verb form. Present perfect tense- the verb (to) have is always the auxiliary verb. In the present perfect tense, the main verb is in the past participle form. ... For regular verbs, the past participle form of the verb is the same as the past tense verb, so you just add -ed! Present perfect continuous tense- (also known as the present perfect progressive tense) shows that something started in the past and is continuing at the present time. The present perfect continuous is formed using the construction has/have been + the present participle (root + -ing).
