The unit explains the importance of Tense in the English Language as a base for good grammatical formation. The English tense is an aspect that should be critically studied as it often gives the student and teacher many difficulties. The tenses in English is divided into Present, Past and Future tense, each of the tense broadly divided into four different parts. The Present Tense: This explains the action of the individual's present state, it is divided into Present Simple: This is the present action of an individual. e.g I sleep, she reads her book, Tunde writes a poem. etc. Present Continuous: This explains the action that is still in progress, an uncompleted action. The verb here mostly ends with "ing" e.g Ade is sitting on a chair, I am reading my book etc. Present Perfect Tense: This tense relates to the past and the present, i.e, Talking about actions already carried out at the present moment. eg He has experienced a lot in life, Sade has eaten yam this morning. etc. Present Perfect Continuous Tense: This tense takes cognizance of past activities in the present day situation. It explains more about what an individual has done within the present/ uncompleted periods. eg, I have been preparing for the debate since morning, Tunde has been learning about trading since the age of six. The past and Future tenses are broadly explained in later unit.
