There are 4 skills which are all equally important: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. For the two receptive skills which are reading and listening, there are different methods to use these skills depending on the information that we are trying to take in. If we want detailed information, we can read or listen to the entire excerpt. There are other methods where we can deduce the main idea or information by skimming or predicting from the headline. If we know what we are looking for, we can scan for the desired information.
