This unit covered conditionals and reported speech. The zero conditional is used to state facts (e.g. if ice melts, it becomes water). The first conditional is used to describe a certain outcome if the conditional is met. The second conditional is used to describe a hypothetical outcome. The third conditional is used to describe the hypothetical past outcome of a past conditional, and the mixed condition describes a hypothetical present outcome of a past conditional. In reported speech, the verb tense and time expression usually backshift.
