This reminds me a bit of how I learned Spanish. My instructor tried to teach us how to use infinitives, and dropped explaining in Spanish for a bit, which he usually did. He explained infinitives and how they are used in English. But before he got far, he said understanding the strict meaning of it all will probably confuse us, and make us sit and think of proper uses when we should be having a conversation. So we glossed past infinitives and went straight to using them in actual sentences, and that made more sense than a textbook ever could.
