This unit teaches different methodologies used to teach, and one in particular: the ESA method, combining other, older methods. Some of these methods are for example the classical method: where the focus of the teaching is on translation (from the learning language to the native language); the audio-lingualism method: where drills are used to make students learn quickly how to pronounce correctly words and phrases, the silent method: where the teacher uses colored lines corresponding to sounds to illustrate words; or suggestopedia: by the use of music, the teacher tries to make the students feel less stressed and more receptable to learning. The ESA method is divided in three phases: Engage - Study - Activate. During the engage part, the teacher makes every student speak, at least a little, English. The point is to make them strat thinking and speaking in English before the actual learning. This can be done by having a debate, asking for lists or games (like Fizz-Bizz or the alphabet chain). During the study phase, students learn new material and the teacher should be able to prove that everyone understood the new material. Linking words, finding words puzzles or fill in the gap exercises are a few examples of things that could be done. It's during this phase that the teacher corrects errors (but always tries to get the good answer from students first). The activate stage allows the students to pratice what they learned, and the focus is on fluency and less on accuracy. Debates and role play are common activities. The three phases can be placed in any order as long as it begins with an engage phase and ends with an activate stage. Mixing the parts tends to make the lessons less predictable and keeps the students intrested.
