Reported speech is used when one wants to report what has been said. When reporting, the tense (in direct speech) needs to be changed (one tense back in indirect/reported speech), as well as the words related to time and place. For example present simple changes to past simple, now to then, here to there. It is never wrong to make these changes, however, it is also correct to leave them the same if they haven't changed (if the place remains the same or the week/month remains the same). Conditional sentences contain the "if" clause and the main clause. There are five main conditionals: zero, first, second, third and the mixed conditional. Zero conditional refers to facts, general truths, and situations that are certain to happen (If you swim, you get wet). The first refers to given promises, threats (the situations that are very likely to happen). For example: If you break the car, I will kill you. The second conditional is used to talk about dreams and fantasies (situations that are not very likely to happen) and to talk about something in the present which is impossible (for example: If I were you, I wouldn't do that.). The third conditional is used to talk about the past (a purely hypothetical situation that didn't happen and to imagine the possible result). For example: If I had had more time, I would have visited you. The most commonly used mixed conditional uses second and the third conditional clause. It refers to a hypothetical situation in the past and the hypothetical present consequence.
