Understanding what characteristics are best for an effective teacher is an important lesson for those wishing to teach. We learned how teachers can motivate students and keep them engaged. It was also important to learn that some methods work well for teaching small children--games, songs, play while working with adults has its own set of challenges including adults unease in making mistakes in front of others. The lesson covered how to work best with teenagers as well and how to avoid embarrassing them which at around the age of 14 becomes very critical. There is a wide range of preparedness of students a teacher might encounter from those that know basically no english all the way to those looking to enhance their vocabulary and ability to discuss a wide range of issues. These advanced students will really depend upon the teacher to be a good model of correct grammar and enhanced vocabulary. The teacher plays many roles in the classroom from manager to facilitator to accessor. It is a great job to be a teacher and loving teaching is one of the most important characteristics of an effective teacher.
