Unit 1 is a great overview of the roles of teachers and learners. Teachers are basically chameleons in that we need to recognize when to be a role model, when to lecture, when to simply observe and when to be a helper. Being sensitive to the needs of the learners is very important to the success of the students. For example when teaching adults we want to recognize that they are usually quite motivated and we can display our passion for teaching and our subject knowledge to instill confidence in our students. When our learners are younger children we can be more animated and playful to keep our students engaged. In the realm of ESL it is particularly important to be culturally aware. For example some students are used to a lecture style while others may be used to learning in a more interactive group setting. Preparation for all levels of learners is key.
