Assessing the students level at the start of the course and progress throughout the course is a valuable indicator to what the students knows, needs to learn, and how well they are learning it. Its critical that the teacher can assess the students, whether through formal assessments or though a means suited to the situation, in order for positive feedback to be given to the students. Without critical positive feedback the students may not know how to evaluate their own progress throughout the class. The assessment should be suited to the needs of the students motivation and structure of the institution. In smaller classes students my be studying for a particular external examination and practice tests can be used to see how close the student is to achieving their wish. In larger classes progress tests can show how well information is being retained and what may need to be revisited.
