Unit 11 dealt with teaching the receptive skills of reading and listening. I learned that people read and listen for a purpose, such as gaining needed information; and for entertainment, like reading a novel or listening to an audiobook by their favorite author. I was taught the various skills people use while reading and listening such as skimming, scanning, and predictive skills. I learned that problems may arise from lengthy sentences or only hearing something once. I was taught that I should pre-teach new vocabulary rather than just spring the activity on them without preparation and how to select texts both authentic and inauthentic that match their skill level while still presenting a bit of a challenge. Also, and perhaps most importantly, I learned that it is best to get to know the students and what they are interested in so that I can choose topics and materials that will engage them and suit their interests. I was presented with sample materials and was able to create lesson plans while adding some of my own information to expand upon the materials.
