While there are endless amounts of topics to teach, and different methodologies to do so, it can be said that there are certain classroom procedures to follow. Of course, these procedures can vary on classroom size, number of students, the atmosphere that the teacher wants to instill, and so on. This unit covers many basic ways a teacher can monitor their classroom. One of the basic principles covered was to avoid monotony in the classroom and keep students engaged. One way to do this is with how the teacher asks their students questions. I learned that the instructor should always ask the question first, then address the student to answer it. Since it is possible for any student to answer the question, all the students will be paying attention in the event that they are the ones called on. I thought that this was a good way to keep students engaged. This unit also talks about some basic discipline aspects of the classroom. It is important to have a sense of respect from the students, while maintaining authority. I learned in this unit that as a teacher it is much easier to start your class at a higher level of discipline and authority, then relax it, as opposed to the other way around. This is because the students will see their teacher as someone who respects their work, and in turn will respect them. This respect should continue as the teacher relaxes their authority. As with all instruction, not only language, teachers should keep in mind the methodologies they use. It is important to keep in mind equal participation and student discipline. It’s also important to remember different seating arrangements and group individual dynamics, so the teacher can vary the style as necessary and as desired.
