It is inevitable that problem situations will arise in the classroom. When this happens, the techniques that the teacher uses is very important to exercise control. Some of the common problem situations are: first lessons, different levels, large classes, use of native language, reluctant students and difficulty with listening texts. First lesson classes are important for building rapport. This usually sets the tone for the rest of the course. First lesson classes fall into two categories:New group and existing group. The use of ice breakers in first lessons are essential in building rapport. Warmers are short, fun activities designed to get students motivated to use English. Examples ofnwarmers are: dictionary, tongue twisters and memory games. Students at different levels can be challenging. However, teacher can use varying techniques to deal with this. Twonsuch techniques are pairing stronger students with weaker ones and use of the same materials for different tasks. Reluctant students is another is another common problem that teachers face. Students can be reluctant for s number of reasons. This can be cultural or they may feel intimidated or have issues with confidence. The teacher can use role play, tape recorder and pair work to get these students to participate and build their confidence levels.
