Listening and reading are the receptive skills in language acquisition. Materials and activities selected for teaching the receptive skills can have a drastic affect on the students enthusiasm and participation. Carefully selected texts and dialogue should give students an opportunity to learn words essential to comprehend the material but also expose students to unknown language to encourage prediction skills. This can be tricky when a teacher may want to use materials they are interested in and can be mediated by understanding what interests the students as well as using a variety of materials. Activities should not only check comprehension but also encourage comprehension by developing skills for predicting, scanning, skimming and searching for specific information. This was an extremely encouraging lesson and has given me ideas about how to discover what students like and how to present it to them.
