Teaching English grammar to English-language learners is wide and complex. Teaching English language points becomes simple and clear when teachers master the ways and/or methodologies of teaching. This unit covers two major English grammar points. These include conditionals and reported speech. Grammatically speaking, there are five main conditional types in English language: zero, first, second, third and mixed conditionals. The usage of the conditionals differs depending on whether the situation is real, unreal, hypothetical or consequence. Selecting the suitable conditional that fits a given context also depends on the time of the action and/or situation if it is in the future, present or in the past. While the zero conditional expresses a real situation/fact, the first conditional communicates a situation that is likely to occur. The second conditional refers to an unreal hypothetical situation occurred either in the present or in the future. The third conditional is a hypothetical past action that generally conveys a result or regret. Lastly, the mixed conditional is used to refer to hypothetical past action mixed with present consequence in the main clause. On the other hand, reported speech and direct speech are also expounded in this unit. Reported speech is commonly known as the report of direct speech into indirect speech. There are plenty of changes that take place within the use of reported speech. These changes range from verb tenses, question form, pronouns to time expressions. It is advisory for teachers to teach reported speech using such as intermediaries and/or media interviews. In my viewpoint, this unit will assist me to explain the aforementioned grammar points in more detailed and clarified manners.
