Unit 13 extensively covered pronunciation and phonology. First, it covered intonation and stress: How intonation can inform the listener if the speaker is finished speaking and if they want a response. How the meaning of a sentence can be determined by which words are stressed. Word linking and sound dropping were explained as well as how they make the speaker sound more fluent.
Phonemic symbols were explained, which can enable one to decipher the pronunciation of almost any language. Articulation was thoroughly covered, including speech organs, the various Places of Articulation and manners of Articulation, which helped me understand how the combination of organs, vibration or lack thereof, and mouth formations can create various sounds.
I was given teaching techniques for all of the above which will, I feel, assist me greatly in being able to grasp these concepts for myself as well as clearly explain them to the students with some confidence.
