When comparing the videos of the 2 lessons taught by the same teacher, the biggest noticeable difference for me was the teacher’s attitude and manner. The teacher was negative and adversarial in the first lesson. Saying “no,” and “you’re wrong,” and “you lose.” He displayed frustration when the students did not understand or answer his questions. He said things like “come on; this is easy.” It was not a supportive, safe feeling environment based on these behaviors that I just listed of the teacher. In the second lesson, he started off much better by asking the students their names. He smiled and was encouraging. He did not correct the students in the engage phase in order to get the students speaking English. He laughed with the students. He called on the students and asked them to repeat what other students had said. The other thing that I noticed was the clarity of activities and transition from one activity to another in the second vs first lesson. It really stressed to me the importance of staying positive and thinking about these little things, because they really do go far in establishing the learning environment.
