It was very insightful to see the students' reaction to the teacher's attitude during the two lessons. There is clear tension and apprehension from the students in the first video. The teacher was short, harsh, and did very little, if any, praising for correct or appropriate answers. I could tell the students were shutting down in the first video because the teacher was almost laughing at their wrong answers. In fact, he would blatantly say, "no that's wrong," and then move along without explaining anything to them. The teacher was much more personable and encouraging in the second video. I could tell the students were eager to participate because the teacher was supportive and gave them a chance to correct their own mistakes. The first lesson was very uncomfortable and I am going to try hard to avoid creating that type of atmosphere when I am teaching. I learnt that being patient, speaking clearly, and explaining instructions relieves stress from the students and makes the class more fun. The students seemed happy to be learning in the second video, which is what I will want for my students one day. In the first video, the teacher was rushing the students by saying things like, "do it quickly, 2'3 minutes," and then shortly after asking them if they had finished yet. He even takes a look at where everyone was in the activity and says, "you've done nothing." Students do not perform their best under pressure when learning a new language. The attitude that the teacher had in the second video was much more motivating for the students. He said, "don't worry if you do not finish the last couple questions, we can do them together," and he encouraged the students to work together, which was not the case in the first video when he told them to read the instructions and work alone without explaining the activity.
