This unit examines coursebooks and supplemental materials for teaching English. I have taken several Spanish courses in my academic life, and I remember textbooks and examples teachers brought in for the class. I particularly enjoyed with teachers selected songs and provided the lyrics for the class to examine and follow along.
Most of what I learned in this unit was jargon. Authentic materials such as newspapers and menus can be tailored to the class and student level. Created materials, particularly textbooks, can be more rigid, but they provide structure. Personally, I like textbooks, and I intend to utilize them as best I can, but these days, textbooks can be prohibitively expensive or outdated. Depending on where I work and how advanced my students are, I might need to omit, replace, supplement, or adapt the textbook materials.
