This unit lists and details various teaching methods utilized over the last 300+ years. Beginning with the classical, or grammar-translation method, which was invented to translate ancient texts, moving through various techniques, and ending with a detailed overview of the ESA method.
ESA, which stands for Engage, Study, and Activate, is considered the most successful method of teaching English. It allows for fun and flexibility, while encouraging students to apply their newly acquired vocabulary and understanding. The Engage stage is mostly a primer, to get students engaged with the class and subject. Once they're present and engaged, a teacher can begin the Study section, or jump straight to the Activate stage and then Study. Multiple variations exist and are appropriate for a variety of settings and subjects. Regardless whether a boomerang, patchwork, or straight arrow method of ESA is employed, all ESA lessons should begin with Engage, and end with Activate.
