Knowing the base of any language is beneficial in understanding the structure. I believe that you can not be proficient or literate if you don't know the basics of the language. Grammar is the back bone of a language and it's what holds everything together. Native speakers are usually not taught the basic grammar, where the new language learners have to learn it from the bottom up. Teachers are not expected to know the entire English grammar, because of it's complexity, but are expected to know enough in order to transfer their knowledge to the English language learners, so they can have a solid grammatical background and solid language foundation.
