Because we have already reviewed the four types of present verb tenses in unit 4, reviewing the same four types in the past tense felt a bit more formulaic and intuitive. The points in unit 6 that stood out the most to me were notes about words that can clue students in to what tense is being used as well as common student errors. For example, the past simple tense can be indicated by the use of the word “ago.” Mistakes in this tense are often with verbs with irregular past simple verb forms and with “did” and “did not.” For the past continuous tense, errors that students commonly make are to confuse it with past simple, leave out the was/were (to be verb linker), and leaving out the “-ing.” The words “after” and “when” signal the use of the past perfect tense. Student errors for past perfect continuous can occur around forgetting either or both of the auxiliary verbs “had been” and also with not using the “-ing” form of the verb.
