The main focus of unit one is the role of the teacher and the variety of students that a teacher could encounter. A teacher needs to have certain stable characteristics such as gentleness in correction, enthusiasm and organization. A teacher should also take on more flexible roles such as a model, a facilitator or a manager. Good teachers can apply those characteristics to all roles in the classroom as needed for a variety of activities and variety of learners. Learners can have a variety of language levels as well as age which will affect the content of the lesson as well as strengths and weaknesses. For example, older learners may be more motivated and have fewer behavior problems, but fear committing errors. Younger learners may have behavior problems, but feel comfortable experimenting with the language.
