This unit explores different teaching methods throughout history such as classical, audio-lingualism (army method), task-based, suggestopaedia (using music to create a learning conductive atmosphere), the silent way (using color rods), and ESA. This curriculum will focus on ESA - Engage, Study, Activate. It is best if each lesson begins in an Engage phase where the teacher gets students warmed up saying something in English, like playing word games or listing words. The Study phase is the actual presentation of new information which should also include some way, like worksheets, to assess student understanding. Lessons can vary and repeat the Engage, Study, and Activate phases depending on the lesson, but should end in an Activate phase where students use what they have learned in the study phase. Examples of the Activate phase are role-playing, mill drill, and debate.
