This unit spoke to the theories, methods and techniques of teaching. It highlighted the different applications used when teaching language and the ways in which they may be employed in order to achieve certain outcomes. It focused on various activities used at different stages in the ESA format which will prove helpful as I teach in the classroom. For example, there are times when I (now having read this chapter) find myself running into the ‘Study’ aspect before completing the ‘Engage’ stage and as a result I end up drilling the students while getting them to think firstly in the language. I did note, too, that in order to get a better understanding of all that wa required for each stage, I had to absorb and re-absorb much of the information presented in the unit. I am confident that with time and practice, I will have mastered the art of using all stages effectively when teaching groups or individuals.
