Basic language skills can be categorized into receptive and productive skills, which break down further into reading and listening skills, on one hand, and speaking and writing skills on the other. This unit explained that people use reading and listening for a purpose or for entertainment or for both. The unit then described what teachers have to keep in mind to build their students' confidence in their receptive skills: introduce topics that are interesting and relevant to the students, use authentic texts that put difficult vocabulary in context, and pre-teach difficult vocabulary or structures only as much as needed for the students to be able to decipher their meanings on their own.
