In this unit, I have learned that there are many categories of nouns, such as abstract and collective nouns. Prior to this, I was familiar with proper nouns, pronouns, plural nouns, and all of the other basic categories that are taught in elementary school. I learned that adverbs are typically put at the end of the sentence if its verb is transitive. If it is intransitive, the adverb goes before the verb. Although this is easy for native speakers of English, students may struggle with this, because syntax is different in various languages. To help them understand, we could play adverb games. Also, I believe that more speaking practice will help. I used to have trouble with the placement of adverbs of frequency in Spanish, but as I continued to speak in Spanish and practice by speaking and making mistakes, I eventually was able to tell where the adverbs went just by what sounded natural. The goal is for them to be able to understand English syntax naturally, but until then, it is necessary to teach students the parts if speech and how they work together.
