I have had a lot of training in how to establish rapport with people, but it has always been in a setting in which they were meant to open up to me. This unit showed me that there is a similarity between teaching and therapy. I can take the skills that I have learned and still be able to apply them in a setting outside of therapy. However, there is still a bit of a difference in how to build rapport. It stands on the idea that I have to give them space to speak for themselves while also letting them interact with each other. So, instead of it being just me and the other person, it is me and several others. Overall, I think that this is a unique realization as well as an in depth learning experience for me. Each aspect of the lesson from how to place the desks to giving instructions all matter in building rapport, and I think that it is crucial to understand that because there are many steps necessary in obtaining trust with anyone. Knowing them and acknowledging their importance helps in the overall success of the class.
