The unit regarding an introduction to grammar as it applies to parts of speech gave an overview of the various parts of speech. A noun names people, animals places things qualities and states. Specifically common, proper, compound, abstract, collective. Plural nouns indicate more than one item. An adjectives are used to describe nouns. Comparative adjectives compare two people or things while superlatives compare multiple nouns. There are two types of articles. Definite articles refer to a specific member of a group while indefinite articles refer to any member of a group. Verbs describe either an "action" or "state of being". Transitive verbs are followed by an object. An intransitive verb is averb that can not be followed by an object. All verbs have a base form preceded by the pronoun "to". Verb forms include base, past simple, past participle, and present participle and many have irregular forms. Auxiliary verbs help form a tense or expression. Adverbs add information regarding the action, quality or state denoted by a verb. They can express manner, place, frequency, degree and time. A gerund is the -ing form of a verb and is used as a noun. It can be used as the object of the preposition, sentence or verb. Pronouns are used instead of precise nouns and can be personal, possessive, reflective or relative. prepositions show the relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word. They can specify place/position, time/date and movement. Conjunctions join words or groups in a sentence that are of the same type like nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives.
