The four main forms: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous each share similar usages to the same form in the present. These similarities will need to be noted in the classroom to help students notice and work towards keeping the two forms separate. By this point in the student’s curriculum, many irregular verbs would have been taught, and it would be good to make sure each student is using a learning technique, like flashcards, to memorize them. Furthermore, students should begin to do exercises that use the past and present tenses along with irregular verbs. A good active learning activity would be to have the class break into groups and give each student a character to play when a mystery happens; each card would have times and what the student was doing at that time.
