Unit 14 discusses course materials and how best to use them in the classroom. One thing to consider is the balance between use of the textbook and on teacher-created materials. It is important to keep in mind that often times teacher-created material is more relevant and interesting to students than textbook materials. However, a textbook usually contains activities that have already been tested and shown effective. It also provides a structured course and students can see how far they have progressed. Authentic materials like newspaper articles, poems, brochures, and movies can help boost students' confidence since they are learning to comprehend real-life English. However, it is hard to control for level and type of language, so must be carefully selected and is often not appropriate for beginner students.
