This unit contrasted the different types of students that a ESL teacher may be have in his or her classroom. A lesson plan for a child and one to teach a business man would be set up very differently but the essential learning points may be the same. There are a lot of different considerations when teaching vocabulary to kids verses adults. Children tend to be curious and their enthusiasm influences how much they will learn and how much they will enjoy it. Adults tend to be more reserved and may not have the same energy level as children learners. When teaching adults and specifically business language, it is important to design lesson plans that are applicable to the learner and however simple the lesson needs to be for the grade level, to respect the learner and not make the lessons juvenile. A teacher needs to consider how to maintain the motivation of students through a quick pace, interesting material and insightful projects.
