There are four forms of the past tense in English. These are the past simple, the past continuous, the past perfect, and the past perfect continuous. The past simple signifies a completed action, the past continuous represents an on-going process in the past, the past perfect means that something had happened before something else in the past, and the past perfect continuous shows that the action had been happening for some time up until another point in the past. The past tense often confuses students, because it is so irregular. There are many past simple irregularities, and there are also many irregular past participles that are use in the present perfect, the past perfect, and the past perfect continuous.
