The productive skills are writing and speaking. While speaking is often a focus of ESA, I believe teaching a balance of speaking and writing is important. Writing allows students to produce the language for themselves and is a key aspect of individual learning process and study. Being able to confidently write a language will lead to better memorization of vocabulary through visualization and allows students to take effective notes and create their own reference material that is significant to them. And I think increasing writing skills would build confidence in speaking.
