Conditionals can portray a wide variety of meanings, depending on if you use zero, first, second, third, or mixed. I can see the challenges in teaching this subject, and find it may be better to use more conversational dialogues to help students understand. Using the conditionals in conversation can help portray their appropriate use. Same with reported speech, these advanced dynamics of the English language would serve better to be absorbed by use than by drilling or testing, to fully grasp the concepts.
