This unit went over the different types of tests that an EFL teacher might use to evaluate their students: placement tests, diagnostic tests, progress tests, practice tests, and external exams. Placement tests are used to help place students in a course at an appropriate level. Diagnostic tests are given at the beginning of a language course to gauge more specifically what the students already know so that the teacher can tailor the curriculum accordingly. Progress tests are given periodically throughout the school term to gauge how much students are remembering of the material. Practice tests might be given if students need to prepare for an external exam, which are often not given as part of the school curriculum. External exams (like the standardized tests U.S. collegebound students have to take) are for the purposes of work and study in a country where the knowledge of English is required.
