Unit 10 covered two lessons. One teacher taught the lesson improperly while the other was taught using effective skills. In the first lesson, the instructor didn't use his students names and pointed at students to elicit answers from them. The lesson was unfocussed and he failed to go through the engage stage of an ESA lesson. During the lesson, he did not write responses on the board and had difficulty locating supplies for the lesson. When he moved to the study phase, he did not provide instructions, instructional support, question wait time, adequate time to complete the worksheet and failed to have them complete the work in pairs or slightly larger groups. During the activate phase, he did not properly explain the assignment, provide clarification, record student answers or offer feedback. Since the activity was unfocused, his students reverted to their native language. In the second lesson, the examples above were corrected and he began the lesson with an engagement exercise eliciting responses from the class without using vocabulary above their skill level. He also allowed the activate portion of the lesson to continue without interruption. He put students at ease with a pleasant demeanor and the students clearly enjoy the assignment. The lesson is organized and focused. Most importantly, students had plenty of time to practice their language skills though monitored drilling, question/response practice and provided feedback.
