This unit explained the main parts of speech in the English language. It will be important to know these parts of speech in order to teach English because the parts of speech can dictate the grammatical form of a sentence. For example, if you want to say that a certain action is bad for you, such as in the question above, you need to know to use the gerund form of the verb. Having this knowledge is necessary for a teacher because if a student asks how to make this construction the teacher can explain gerunds and when and how they are used in English. The unit also gave helpful suggestions on how to teach specific parts of speech, such as the suggestion to play the adverb game. Also, it included helpful rules and patterns that a native speaker might not know off the top of their head, but will really help a student of English. One such example explained that in comparative adjectives those with 3 or more syllables will take "more" rather than "-er".
