This unit introduces the past tenses. These are: simple past, past perfect, past continuous, past perfect continuous. Simple past is used for a finished action at a specific point of time in the past. It is formed by adding -ed for regular verbs. Irregular verbs can cause problems because they need to be learned. Past continuous is used for an ongoing action in the past. We use was/were and the present participle to form it. Past Perfect is used for an action that happened before a different action in the past. We use had and the past participle to form it. Past perfect continuous is used for an action that had been going on before an action in the past started. We form it with had been plus present participle. This tense is not very commonly used.
