This first unit was focused on the basic elements of the classroom: teacher and student. This unit went on to examine what characterizes a good teacher and what characterizes a good student. For both of these the answer seems to be the same: both the teacher and the student need to care. The need to need to care about the content, about the student learning the content, and the student needs to be motivated to learn--they need to care about learning.
The first step in teaching is assessing your students so that you can meet them at the appropriate level. If frustrated by too challenging a course, you might lose students and conversely by offering too simple course content you will cause advanced students to be bored and lose interest. Therefore you must recognize the subtle but vital difference between individuals. These differences between learners come about due to age, culture, knowledge of English –and that is part of what makes this career path so interesting to me—you are challenged to meet each student as an individual and work with them where they are.
