This unit gave me a basic overview of sentence structure and parts of speech in the English language. Overall, the unit was a review of what I already knew about the language, but there were many subjects that I either never had heard of or didn’t properly remember the rules for. One example of this is the gerund. Perhaps when I learned about this part of speech in school it was called by a different name, but I had never heard this word before. The concept makes sense, and now I understand it completely. The rest of the unit went into great detail of every part of speech, helping to remind myself of the intricacies of the English language. It also reiterated the fact that English is actually grammatically a complicated language with many irregularities, and therefore will be a challenge to teach new learners. Regardless of that fact, this unit has given me a good basis for continuing my English teaching certification course.
