Modal verbs, or auxiliary verbs, are used to show possibility, probability, and certainty. They are also used to express obligation, ability, and advice. As a native speaker of English, I believe that this is the most difficult topic to cover grammatically because the speaker has to understand many different aspects of the language to use modals, clauses, and phrasal verbs correctly. The speaker has to understand the syntax and verb conjugations well. Especially in using the passive voice, one must to be able to rearrange the object of an active verb into the subject of the passive verb. For phrasal verbs, the difference between both object pronouns and nouns must be understood to differentiate the types, which can also be a challenge for both non-native and native English speakers alike.
