In this unit I learned about various methods of evaluating both a students level and progress. There are 3 basic methods, tutorials, evaluation by the students and testing. Tutorials can be done as a group or individually however individual tutorials can be time consuming. Evaluation by the students of the course (not the teachers personality) can be a good way to assess the courses strengths and weaknesses. A teacher can get students opinion on the level of grammar, balance of skills and difficulty and make course adjustments as necessary. Testing is broken down into four categories. Placement Tests are given to evaluate a new students current level for correct placement into the appropriate class. Progress Tests should be given regularly to find out which lessons have been retained and which have not. Diagnostic Tests, while similar to Placements Tests can be a bit more extensive. The aim of the Diagnostic Test is to locate a students weaknesses to make any necessary course adjustments and preparations to address any issues found. Practice tests are given in preparation for external testing and should follow the general layout and level of the external test to be taken. General External Tests are given for a variety of reasons including School Admission, Certificates for Business language, basic day to day English and more.
