Unit 18: Modals, Phrasal Verbs and Passive Voice discusses the use of modal auxiliary verbs, passive and active voice and and relative clauses and phrasal verbs in English and ways to teach them to students. Modals, such as 'can'; 'may'; and 'should', are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. They can be used to express obligation; possibility or probability; permission or prohibition; ability; and advice. Passive voice is used when the performer of the action is not known, is not important or the speaker or writer does not want to identify the performer. Relative clauses group together words containing a subject and a verb. These can be Independent, Dependent or Relative clauses. Relative clauses can be further separated into Defining and Non-defining relative clauses. Phrasal Verbs are multi word verbs that operate as one item. They can be Intransitive, Transitive Separable or Transitive Inseparable.
