This unit explains how the teacher can use different techniques to teach vocabulary to students.Since most of the students are beginners,the teacher can use three main techniques to teach.The first technique is the ‘straight arrow’ structure which involves Engage-Study-Activate.The second technique is the patchwork grammar lesson which involves Engage-Activate-Study-Activate-Study-Activate.The third technique is the boomerang lesson type which involves Engage-Activate-Study-Activate.Also,it is important for the teacher to consider certain factors when selecting a vocabulary to teach,that is,whether it is appropriate to the students and the task,the frequency of the word and it’s coverage and,the teachability of the word,that is, how simple and clear it is for students to learn.Finally by using pictures,discovery at the Engage stage,Gap-fill excercise,word searches at the Study stage and role-play,debate at the Activate stage,the teacher can help the students to understand the lesson better.
